As do all of Moreno-Torroba's compositions, it oozes Spanish nationalism. Lasting only about three minutes, this spirited work, marked "Allegretto grazioso, " invites the guitarist to take full advantage of the instrument's broad tonal palette. The single-movement Madronos opens with an infectious melody which recurs throughout the piece.

While that readily communicated melody may at first give the work a somewhat "simple" sound, a close examination of the underlying harmonies of this homophonically textured piece, reveal the genius with which it is composed. The color and richness of the accompaniment enable the otherwise innocent melody to take on its mature character. This piece follows the traditional A-B-A form common to much Spanish romanticism. However, in the recapitulation, the A section is cut short after only the beginning phrase, to enter into a short coda that brings the piece to a close.

There is little difference in mood between the A and B sections. Both uphold the vivacious nature that permeates the work from start to finish. Short and zesty, Madronos may be the ideal piece for the uninitiated looking for their first exposure to classical music.
