HONS AND REBELS JESSICA MITFORD PDF

The Mitford Sisters continue to fascinate many, for a variety of reasons. As is probably known to most, the family, who were both influential and close to other influential people, was markedly eccentric. And the books written by the book writing sisters, primarily novelist Nancy and journalist and political activist Jessica Decca in different ways lift the lid on their bizarre eccentric upbringing and on the unpleasant attitudes of privileged class politics. What particularly fascinates is the fact that 4 of the 6 daughters had beliefs or behaviours or lifestyles or all 3 which were deeply shocking not only within their own circles, but within the wider world, and 3 of the 6 Diana, Unity, Jessica sought active involvement either in the politics of the times s and beyond or were close to those who were so involved. Diana was one of the s hedonistic Bright Young Things.

The brilliantly entertaining classic memoir of one of the century's most extraordinary families, The Mitfords. The Mitford family is one of the century's most enigmatic, made notorious by Nancy's novels, Diana's marriage to Sir Oswald Mosley, Unity's infatuation with Hitler, Debo's marriage to a duke and Jessica's passionate commitment to communism.

Hons and Rebels is an enchanting and deeply absorbing memoir of an isolated and eccentric upbringing which conceals beneath its witty, light-hearted surface much wisdom and depth of feeling. Being something of a student of the Mitford family i found this book and the books listed below to be extremely absorbing and well written The Mitfords were, and in the case of Lady Devonshire still are, a most Please sign in to write a review.

Debo has an eternal place in my heart, but, even though none of the others quite made it there, I still adored reading the letters between all six sisters. I was chastised. I was told I should read her letters and her books, and that thus I would come to like her more. Do I like her more? On the same page? In actual fact, Jessica or Decca, as she was known comes across very sympathetically.

Hons and Rebels by Jessica Mitford

Hons and Rebels is an autobiography by political activist Jessica Mitford , which describes her aristocratic childhood and the conflicts between her and her sisters Unity and Diana , who were ardent supporters of Nazism. Unity befriended Nazi leader Hitler , [2] who praised her as an ideal of Aryan beauty. They were put there by my sister Unity and myself when we were children. Hanging on the walls are framed pictures and poems done by Unity when she was quite small—queer, imaginative, interesting work, some on a tiny scale of microscopic detail, some huge and magnificent. The Hons' Cupboard, where Debo and I spent much of our time, still has the same distinctive, stuffy smell and enchanting promise of complete privacy from the Grown-ups. Mitford and Hons and Rebels are cited by J.
