Another study is planned by Professor Yates to deal with Bruno's mnemonic studies and Lullian tradition, which are treated here only insofar as they are part of the Hermetic core of Bruno's philosophy. All in all, this is a very exciting and interesting volume.

The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast. Giordano Bruno. He might have been referring to the sixteenth-century Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was tried by two Inquisitions and burned at the stake in Rome in Bruno's most representative work, Spaccio de la bestia trionfante The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast , published in an atmosphere of secrecy in and never referred to as anything but blasphemous for more than a century, was singled out by the church tribunal at the summation of his final trial.
That is hardly surprising because the book is a daring indictment of the corruption of the social and religious institutions of his day. The "triumphant beast" signifies the reign of multifarious vices. Cast in the form of allegorical dialogues, Bruno's work presents the deliberations of the Greek gods who have assembled to banish from the heavens the constellations that remind them of their evil deeds.
The crisis facing Jove, the aging father of the gods, is symbolic of the crisis in a Renaissance world profoundly disturbed by new religious, philosophical, and scientific ideas. Arthur D. Imerti, former head of the Department of Foreign Languages at the New School for Social Research in New York City, provides a brilliant introduction to the philosopher who dared to voice his audacious theories of nature, religion, and history.

The author of more than sixty works on mathematics, science, ethics, philosophy, metaphysics, the art of memory, and esoteric mysticism, Bruno had a profound impact on Western thought. In my translation, I have endeavored to convey to the reader not only the literal meaning of Spaccio de la bestia trionfante but also its style. When necessary, however, I changed the word order, modified the punctuation, paragraphed passages that ran on for several pages, and broke up involved sentences especially after clauses ending with a colon or semicolon, where a change of subject was indicated. Wherever I felt that the antecedents in Bruno's involved sentence structure were ambiguous, I inserted them either in the text itself or in bracketed inter-. An unknown error has occurred.

Giordano Bruno was a truly cosmopolitan figure of the late Italian Renaissance. Often called the Nolan after his birthplace near Naples, Bruno wandered restlessly across Europe preaching his doctrine of cosmic consciousness and publishing it in dialogues and poetry that read today like volcanic spiritual upheavals. With Tommaso Campanella, author of the utopian City of the Sun and a controversial Defense of Galileo, Bruno represents the traumatic decline of humanistic philosophy, heralding the birth of modern natural science at the hands of Galileo and Francis Bacon. His major writings, attacking the Roman Catholic Church and celebrating the poetic frenzy of creative geniuses, have inspired writers of a similar temperament down to the days of James Joyce, who drew on Bruno, as well as Giambattista Vico, for Finnegans Wake.
