One important source of information in descriptive and historical translation studies is the analyisis of elements traditionally considered to be extra-textual and not part of the translation process, such as the publishing house and date, introduction, preface, footnotes and so on. These elements, as part of the macrostructural features of a translated text, provide preliminary information about the way a literary text has been received and the position it has occupied in the target literary system. They also allow us to anticipate the strategies used by the translator and the norms regulating a specific translation policy. The aim of this paper is to carry out a preliminary study of the reception of John Clelands's novel, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, in Spain, by means of an analysis of the extra-textual elements of the Spanish editions. Dentro del marco de los estudios descriptivos de traduccion, el analisis de elementos considerados tradicionalmente ajenos al proceso de traduccion por su naturaleza extratextual, como pueden ser los datos de indole bibliografica, han adquirido una importancia antes impensable para el conocimiento del contexto historico concreto.
