Thorarinn, son of Dorarinn, heir to the mountain fortress of Skorrgead! This story is book 1 of The Dragonlord Chronicles, a trilogy that focuses on the fantasy world of Mystara.

The story begins with a prologue introducing the main character, Thelvyn Fox-Eyes, when he was still in the womb. His mother, a mysterious sorcerer from an unknown race and land, flees a pack of dragons into a small mountain village and leaves her baby to be raised by the villagers. Now a teenager, Thelvyn is fascinated by the mystery of who he is and where he came from, but gets no answers until dragons begin suddenly attacking the northern lands once more. The world of Mystara seems well thought out, with places, peoples, governments, and creatures that fit together to make a traditional fantasy realm.

A two-page decorated map is included behind the front cover, and most of the locations on the map are visited at some point during the story. Humans, elves, dwarves, dragons, a barbarian, and even an assortment of pagan gods have their 15 minutes of fame at some point or another.

The story and characters were fine. On the bad side, there were some very slow spots in the story. The author devotes lots of attention to the politics of various races and kingdoms, with pages on end describing the political machinations of this group or that clan or those leaders. I may have skipped a few paragraphs here and there….

There was also a LOT of traveling. It felt a bit like the Travel Channel, but without the benefit of visuals. But overall, this was a decent book. Cover report: The cover of this book, by Danilo Gonzalez, does seem to be made just for this story, as it features the four main characters of the story.

However, the dragons in the book are red and green, while the cover has a blue dragon. Typo police: I found one typo in this book, near the beginning of chapter 5.
